Communications & Public Affairs (C&PA) is responsible for setting the institutional communication plan and strategies for the University. Working with senior leadership and partners in Divisions and Faculties, C&PA advances and protects York University's brand and reputation.

We are looking for a senior strategic communication professional to join our team and to help build our employer brand by leading employee communications, organizational communications planning, and engagement initiatives.  

The Director of Strategic & Internal Communications will lead three of our eight centres of communications excellence i) Strategic Communication Planning   ii) Internal Communications and iii) Publications. 
 
Reporting to the Chief Communications & Marketing Officer, the Director brings demonstrated communication planning experience in internal communications/ employee engagement and has superior writing and editing skills. They will identify, define and develop communication plans/strategies and implementation approach  to guide York communicators and others in designing, preparing and executing proactive or reactive communications.

As a thoughtful collaborator and experienced team-leader, you will effectively engage and work across diverse stakeholder groups and provide communication advice and counsel to senior leadership.

As a senior member of York’s CPM staff, the Director will actively champion a culture of respect, collegiality, equity, and inclusion.
 

Qualifications

Education:
University degree, preferably a Master's degree in English, journalism or a communications related field.

Experience:
Minimum ten (10) years of experience in corporate/ institutional communications including senior management level experience, complemented by exceptional judgment and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic and complex environment. Experience in a matrixed organization having had a leadership role in internal / employee communications and producing publications. Knowledge of, and experience in other areas of communication is highly beneficial including media relations, marketing, and public relations. Essential Experience: Demonstrated ability to work across diverse groups to develop comprehensive and integrated communication plans and strategies. Internal communication/ employee engagement with specific experience in culture change communications. Internal issues management including labour relations.Understanding the nature of a University community, and academic priorities. second language. prior experience as a journalist are assets.
