Job Description

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is the City of Ottawa’s community police service, committed to ensuring that Ottawa remains one of the safest cities in North America by protecting the safety, security and quality of life of its citizens. Created in 1995, OPS employs a staff of over 2100 police officers and civilians and responds to nearly 300,000 calls per year. 
OPS is currently seeking its next Director, Corporate Communications.
Reporting to the Executive Director, Strategy and Communications, as Director you establish and oversee the corporate communications plans and projects that support the strategic development of the organization. This includes the development of a long-term digital strategy, content marketing and corporate identity/branding plans for OPS. You provide strategic leadership to the Corporate Communications and Media Relations sections, staff and contractors to ensure that services and programs meet the needs of the Ottawa Police Service and the National Capital Region’s diverse community. You advise and support the OPS Executive Leadership Team on all aspects of corporate communications, media relations and issues management in coordination with the Ottawa Police Services Board. 
 

Qualifications

As an ideal candidate, you possess a university degree in a relevant discipline (Communications, Public Relations, Public Administration, etc.) as well as 8+ years of progressive leadership experience and expertise in community development, communications, public relations, and media relations. A relevant mix of education and practical experience is also acceptable. Highly strategic and forward thinking, you have a strong business and financial acumen and demonstrated experience in program, policy and process development and implementation. You are skilled in the development of short and long-term plans to cultivate strong corporate communications, at all levels, both internally and externally. You are an outstanding relationship builder capable of fostering positive relationships based on trust within the OPS, with community groups, partners, key stakeholders and with the media. You are a true team player who is politically astute, collegial and collaborative by nature. An excellent problem solver who is creative and solutions oriented, you are comfortable with ambiguity and working within dynamic environments where crisis management and the need to work with dedication and agility is the norm. You are highly resilient and adaptable, and deeply respected for your passion for client service and the community. Though not a mandatory requirement, bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset.
