Job Description

PETRONAS Canada currently has a vacancy for a Director, Communications & Community Relations to join our team in Calgary. Reporting to the Vice President, External Affairs & Communications, the incumbent is expected to bring strong leadership, high energy and a passion for fresh thinking to the role. The ability to inspire a dynamic, talented team, and identify and understand the critical challenges facing the company are a must, as are exceptional internal and external communication skills. As a key leader within PETRONAS Canada, this role will provide ongoing support and communication advice to company leadership and internal stakeholders to ensure staff are informed, there is alignment with company messaging, established brand standards and business objectives, and there is strengthened opportunity for two-way communication.

This role will also support the Vice President, External Affairs & Communications in the development of a corporate responsibility framework for the company, the creation of a natural gas narrative, which will form the basis for both an internal speakers bureau and an employee ambassador program, and in the care and management of the company’s brand, ensuring clear alignment with the company’s culture. Additionally, the successful candidate will play a crucial part in raising the company’s profile in Canada, forming strong relationships with PETRONAS global and leading transformational engagement opportunities in the communities where PETRONAS Canada operates.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Lead and inspire a team of talented communicators
  • Oversee the management of the company brand and ensure fit-for-purpose integration with the global communications and brand teams
  • Ensure cross-functional understanding of the internal and external challenges facing the company, and develop communications strategies to address those challenges
  • Reinforce leader accountabilities as they relate to communications and provide messaging to those leaders to strengthen consistency and enhance the level of information sharing across the company
  • Collaborate on ways to further enhance the internal and external communications vehicles and forums
  • Build strong relationships with key media and influencers, and develop the social media platform required to address misinformation and build the company’s reputation
  • Develop annual plans in support of the department’s integrated strategy
  • Manage the community investment budget, and high-grade the company’s community investment opportunities as appropriate
  • Oversee the Crisis Communication Plan
  • Oversee the content for all external vehicles and channels, such as position papers on issues affecting the industry, holding statements and fact sheets, ensuring they are consistent and reflect the brand and visual identity
  • Actively engage in speaking opportunities and forums on behalf of the company, while consistently ensuring we are developing compelling presentations and speeches that optimize audience impact and relevancy
  • Lead an advertising strategy to enhance the company’s presence in the communities where it operates and develop mechanisms to strengthen the company’s visibility in the country
  • Identify the strategic approach required for the company to leverage its corporate giving to the best business advantage and reinforce the company’s brand, values and strategy
  • Lead the preparation of updates on media coverage or industry issues for the Leadership Team, the PETRONAS Canada Board, and parent company, to maximize trust in the work the department is doing
  • Other special projects as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field
  • Minimum 10 years of leadership experience and 15 years of broad Communications experience, with at least 10 years in a corporate environment
  • Strong operational and people leadership skills with the ability to develop effective relationships and collaborate with all levels and functions of the business, both internally and externally
  • A results-orientated team player whose communication style and personal style fosters an atmosphere of high performance, and teamwork
