Job Description

Applications are invited to apply to the position of Communications Specialist in Corporate Communications, located at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus. The starting hourly wage rate is $31.68/hour for a 35 hour work week. This is an Appendix D, temporary position as per Article 17.3.1 of the Support Staff Collective Agreement, for 12 months with duties to commence May 2020.

Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Communications, the Communications Specialist is responsible for the daily coordination and production of Niagara College’s major communications channels. The Communications Specialist generates high quality written content to support Niagara College’s strategic communications initiatives and objectives.  

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Builds and maintains relationships within a portfolio of internal college clients to support a proactive approach to College communications
  • Works with the Manager, Corporate Communications and the department’s Communications Consultant’s in the preparation of media materials and planning and execution of media events.
  • Responsible for executing tactics for the promotion of college initiatives through a variety of communications channels including print, digital, media relations and social networks. 
  • Coordinate photos and video to accompany content on the College’s communications channels, and provide written and photographic coverage of college events for web and print.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • A minimum of a 3-year degree/diploma in Journalism, Public Relations or related field
  • A minimum of 3 years related experience; experience in post-secondary education and a large, complex organization an asset
  • Media relations experience
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit and proofread at an advanced level in the English language with impeccable accuracy in grammar, spelling and content verification
  • Expertise in creating compelling communications pieces for a wide variety of audiences using multiple communication vehicles
  • Proficiency in writing full stories, converting written articles/media releases into various formats
  • Strong knowledge and familiarity with communication technologies and channels, including digital and social media
  • Photography skills. Video skills considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels
  • The incumbent must be an experienced and creative writer with an ability to work independently and exercise good judgement while adhering to deadlines and managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with constantly shifting priorities.
