Reporting to the Manager of Communications and Community Engagement, the Communications Officer is responsible for developing comprehensive communication plans for Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board which includes research, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
 
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Provide advice, conceptualize, formulate, and implement communication strategies and programs to strengthen relationships between the Board, its employees, parents/guardians/caregivers, and partners
  • Take a proactive position with media, staff, community groups, and Board representatives while preparing written communication such as media releases, articles, publications (digital and print), speeches, and presentations
  • Support schools and respond to issues, concerns and information needs through direct contact with groups or written communications
  • Utilize various digital platforms for the purpose of clear communications
  • Contribute to social media and coordinate content for Board websites

Qualifications

 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related field, or equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum of five years' progressively responsible experience as a communications and public relations professional, ideally gained in a politically focused environment such as a school board or municipal/provincial government with a demonstrated track record of success with proactive issues management
  • Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) is an asset
  • Experience with the development and execution of effective and targeted communication and issue management plans and production of publications as well as strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Experience building and maintaining a strategic social media engagement plan and will be knowledgeable and creatively engaged with evolving social media, mobile and other digital platforms
  • Demonstrate an anti-racist understanding and be responsive to the needs and interests of diverse stakeholders
  • Experience working with racialized, marginalized and equity seeking groups within the Hamilton community
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative working relationships and provide exemplary service to internal and external stakeholders, levels of government and media
  • Excellent research and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy, ability to meet timelines and maintain confidentiality
  • Analytical, problem solving and strategic thinking skills
  • The successful applicant will be required to work a flexible work week during peak workload periods
