Communications Consultant

Job Description

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Builds and maintains relationships within assigned portfolio of internal college clients to support a proactive approach to College communications
  • Liaises with external partners and is responsible for coordinating the production of media materials generated from within assigned portfolio
  • Responsible for executing tactics for the promotion of college initiatives through a variety of communication channels including print, digital, media relations and social networks.
  • Assist in crisis communications and issues management
  • Collaborating with the Manager, Corporate Communications to create, write and edit communication pieces (including gathering facts, planning and research). This includes submission to various sector publications as well as proactively pitching stories to the media.
  • Represent the college to the media, frequently acting as a first point of contact and spokesperson when required

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a 3-year degree/diploma in Journalism, Public Relations or similar field of study
  • A minimum of 5 years related experience; experience in post-secondary education and a large, complex organization an asset
  • Media relations experience
  • Experience in crisis communications and issues management
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit and proofread at an advanced level in the English language with impeccable accuracy in grammar, spelling and content verification
  • Expertise in creating compelling communications pieces for a wide variety of audiences using multiple communication vehicles
  • Proficiency in writing full stories, converting written articles/media releases into various formats
  • Strong knowledge and familiarity with communication technologies and channels, including digital and social media
  • Photography and video skills an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels
  • The incumbent must be an experienced and creative writer with an ability to work independently and exercise good judgement while adhering to deadlines and managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with constantly shifting priorities.
