As Alberta’s newest city, we’re growing fast and looking to strengthen our communications and marketing team. We’re seeking a dynamic, results-oriented and experienced Senior Strategist, Communications and Marketing, to help us up our game. You have a passion for building a great organizational brand while working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners. You are confident and pride yourself on your customer service and client management skills, and people often come to you for counsel and strategic advice. 

The Senior Strategist, Communications and Marketing, will develop, support and deliver communications and marketing strategies, programming, products and activities. This includes, but is not limited to design and development of innovative marketing and promotional campaigns, providing strategic advice and technical assistance to departments; research and evaluation of communication processes and products; facilitating public events including open houses, focus groups and information sessions; media relations; and writing news releases, statements, announcements, and other print and digital media.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Leading the development and execution of integrated communications and marketing strategies
  • Researching, writing and editing a range of content for various channels and mediums, including social media, web, advertising, news releases, speeches and presentations
  • Assisting senior management, departments, peers and the organization as a whole in identifying communications opportunities, and lead them to effective key messaging to meet target audience needs with engaging content
  • Using data and performance measures to develop effective strategies and solutions backed by evidence
  • Supporting the development of public reports, including drafting and editing content, coordinating graphic design, ensuring message and brand alignment
  • Advising departments on public consultation strategies, programs and activities
  • Detecting and monitoring emerging issues
  • Identifying reputational and other communications risks and developing mitigation strategies and tactics
  • Assisting with the development of surveys, reports and other public engagement material
  • Identifying and recommending efficient processes and solutions

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of communications and marketing strategies, initiatives, and objectives
  • Excellent writing skills and experience writing, as well as strong editing and proofreading abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to build and foster relationships
  • Ability to work effectively with senior leaders and council in a wide variety of settings across the organization
  • Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining a positive and proactive attitude 
  • Knowledge and experience with media relations
  • Ability to research and keep current with industry best practices and innovation 


  • Degree or diploma in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or other related discipline – equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum six (6) years of progressively responsible, more complex communications experience
  • IABC or CPRS accreditation would be an asset
  • General knowledge of design, desktop publishing, digital communications and content management
  • Excellent writing skills and experience in copywriting and editing
  • Experience with media relations, managing stakeholders and reputation management
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience working in a municipal or public service environment is an asset
  • Clear Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the City
