Job Description

Syncrude Canada Limited Ltd.'s Government and Public Affairs Department is seeking an experienced candidate to join our team. The Public Affairs Specialist is a senior member of the internal communications team with a strong knowledge of the operations and industry.
This is a generalist communications position providing strategic development and implementation of projects and improved effectiveness of the department in promoting Syncrude’s vision, mission and values. This is an extremely well-rounded communications professional with experience and knowledge in special projects and internal communications. This includes demonstrating strong skills in writing, project management and digital media. The Public Affairs Specialist would also mentor junior and intermediate department staff to build comprehensive knowledge in communications.
Key Accountabilities
  • Develops and implements strategies to manage Syncrude’s evolving needs in the area of internal communications.
  • Manages special projects to continue deliver quality communications for the organization. This includes the planning, execution and stewardship for key projects.
  • Leads significant special projects as assigned by the Team Leader of Internal Communications, Manager of Government and Public Affairs Manager and/or Vice-president of Government and Public Affairs as required.
  • Supports the content team and contribute to Syncrude’s internal channels and internal digital communication.
  • Works with departments to highlight a variety of Syncrude projects, events and initiatives.
  • Supports the Team Leader of Internal Communications to further develop the skills of the communications team. In particular provides guidance and mentoring to staff in the areas of internal communications.
  • Serves as an on-call member of the Public Affairs team under the Emergency Response Procedures.


Experience and Education
  • A degree or diploma in Public Relations or Journalism and/or relevant experience of at least 10 years
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Ability to work with tact and diplomacy across all levels of the organization, and with external stakeholders to maintain Syncrude’s reputation.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex technical information, frequently to a non-technical audience, in order to influence actions and/or public understanding.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to exercise sound judgment to a variety of complex situations.
  • Ability to work effectively and build strong relationships with all levels of management and the Syncrude workforce.
  • Ability to work in concert with other specialists to produce high quality products.
  • Team player with ability to work independently as required.
  • Supervisory/mentoring skills.
  • Willingness to travel within the province of Alberta (Fort McMurray, Calgary and Edmonton) on an occasional basis.
  • Willingness to take part in on-call rotation.
