Job Description

Serving over 15,000 students, the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) is an innovative Board with facilities covering Huron and Perth Counties in southwestern Ontario, including the City of Stratford and rural communities bordering the beautiful shores of Lake Huron.  Based in our Education Centre in Seaforth, the AMDSB invites applications for the position of full-time permanent Manager of Communications, effective immediately.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Education, and directing the activities of an assigned communications team, the Manager of Communications will provide strategic and tactical expertise in planning, developing and implementing internal and external communications programs. You will be a resource to the Board’s senior administration, trustees, and school and department staff, advising on crisis communications and media relations.

As a communications professional, you welcome the opportunity to research and develop strategic communications plans to support Board initiatives and goals, research and write concise, clear speeches and other content, and develop targeted communications plans. Your outstanding writing, presentation and planning skills will be used to develop and deliver presentations to internal and external audiences, provide communications support to schools and departments, promote and market AMDSB schools and initiatives, plan special events, and create and supervise social media and online communications strategies. Communications will be aligned with the vision, mission, values and priorities of AMDSB.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic counsel to senior administration, trustees and administrators on emerging board, school and community-related issues
  • Draft, implement and oversee all communications plans for board and school initiatives
  • Manage the operation of the Communications department
  • Write speaking notes and key messages for the Chair of the Board, Trustees, Director of Education, senior staff and school administrators, as required
  • Liaise with the media, including coordinating media interviews, researching and writing media advisories, news releases and articles, promoting school initiatives, and responding to media requests
  • Maintain and enhance the Board’s online presence, i.e. intranet and external websites. This includes oversight of the day-to-day management, messaging and maintenance of these sites to meet the needs of all audiences.  
  • Contribute to and oversee the writing, design and production of publications, including brochures, flyers, guides, reports and other traditional communications materials
  • Provide communications leadership and support during emergency/crisis situations
  • Develop creative, consistent and proactive branding and marketing strategies, e.g. student registration campaigns
  • Actively participate on committees, such as Senior Staff, Parent Involvement Committee, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
  • Coordinate special events, including Board awards and employee recognition
  • Oversee photography/video services and graphic design support
  • Other related duties that may be assigned in support of the communications function


Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field
  • Accreditation in public relations is preferred
  • Minimum five years of experience supporting the development, implementation and evaluation of corporate communications strategies and initiatives
  • Knowledge and understanding of public education is an asset

  • Proven dynamic leadership experience and capabilities in a communications position
  • Strategic thinker, comfortable offering counsel to senior staff and Trustees
  • Excellent written communications skills and deep knowledge of communications principles, procedures and practices
  • Proven diplomacy, flexibility, the ability to remain calm under pressure, deal with ambiguity, and deliver results under tight timelines
  • High level of confidence and comfort/experience in working with with the media and serving as a chief spokesperson
  • Displays professionalism and diplomacy, and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Highly organized, motivated and proactive
  • Able manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Collaborative team player who builds and uses positive relationships to promote the Board, its staff, students and community
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, including the ability to train others
  • Excellent project management skills and organizational skills
