Job Description

The Director, Communications reports to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and is responsible for internal and external communications activities of the Region. As the chief storyteller, the Director implements the Region's Master Narrative through proactive communications and marketing, speechwriting, issues management, crisis communications, media relations, social media, community and public relations. The Director provides thoughtful, strategic, and creative professional communications advice to the CAO, Regional Chair, Regional Councillors, Department Heads, and staff of all levels across the Region. Leading a team of professional communicators, the Director oversees their growth and professional development. The Director plays a lead role in emergency information activities and is also the chief spokesperson for the Region – both proactively and in crisis communications and issues-management capacity.


The ideal candidate possesses a relevant university degree and at least eight years of senior communications experience. You have led and inspired a high performing team within an environment where there is intense public scrutiny. You have a deep understanding of trends and current affairs within government, as well as the ability to forge relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Your agility and insight enable you to manage fast-moving and complex issues. Your track record includes narrative-driven communications, issues management and media relations, along with experience presenting to senior executives and acting as your organization’s chief spokesperson in all forms of media.
