Husky is currently looking for a Director, Communications to join their Corporate Affairs department at their Calgary, AB location.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs, the Director, Communications provides leadership, direction, mentorship and alignment for a team of approximately 20 communication professionals in Canada and the United States.

The Director, Communications develops strategic contemporary and integrated communication plans to engage key external and internal stakeholders (employees, investors, government and operating communities) while ensuring the integrity of Husky’s identity, brand and narrative.

This role supports key C-Suite communications and public relations, working collaboratively as part of the broader Corporate Affairs leadership team accountable for investor, government, community and Indigenous relations at Husky.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Leadership and development of Husky’s overall external and internal communication and public relations. This includes management strategies and plans supporting Husky's business goals and objectives, regularly testing and upgrading Crisis Communications training and process, ensuring efficiency readiness and effective response.
  • Leading a culture of transformation and continuous improvement, incorporating best practices within corporate communications.
  • Developing and implementing strategy and management techniques (e.g. research, planning and tracking mechanisms such as scorecards) to track and coordinate activities, clearly articulating objectives and results.
  • Leading, mentoring and coaching Communications staff while fostering a culture of collaboration, professionalism and a focus on delivering results together.
  • Understanding, interpreting and applying communication research techniques, data and stakeholder insights to communication strategies and activities. While at the same time managing external and internal consultant and vendor relationships, including Husky’s outsourced creative and graphic design services.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or related post-secondary designation.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the following areas:
    • Professional experience working in corporate communications, external and internal, in the private, public or not-for-profit sector.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage large scale programs and projects, ensuring timeliness and accuracy of deliverables, anticipate challenges, develop recommendations, brief managers, manage project budgets and relevant agencies or other external partners.
    • Proven experience in Issues management / Crisis communication, with a thorough understanding of the Incident Command System (ICS), crisis roles and responsibilities, preparedness, and training.
    • Professional experience working as part of a senior management team and history of providing leadership and support to business leaders and specialized functions such as Safety, HR, IS, business development, and investor relations.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the following:
    • Proven exceptional writing and storytelling skills, including development and delivery of articles, news releases, media alerts, backgrounders, fact sheets, speeches, bios, executive briefing materials, web site content and other media / digital communication content.
    • Overseeing digital and social media, including demonstrated understanding of paid, earned and owned digital media integration.
    • Media relations, including strong relationships with business journalists, creating media strategies and pitching traditional and social media; helping plan and execute media events to achieve positive and balanced media coverage; ability to provide timely and in-depth analysis of coverage results and media trends; manage and interact with media in crisis situations.
    • Working in the Oil and Gas sector
  • Previous experience working in a large scale, multinational organization (headquarters within or outside Canada)
  • Relevant industry background in the following areas:
    • Oil and Gas
    • Pipelines
    • Technology/IT
    • Airlines
    • Manufacturing
    • Government
    • Public/Non-for-profit
  • Exceptionally proficient in using Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Word and Excel etc.)
  • Previous experience in the following:
    • Project, Staff and Agency Management
    • Public speaking/presentations
    • Engaging with and leveraging media and social media
    • Visual ID, brand management, graphic design and copywriting

Assets:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration
  • Membership/Accreditation with Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) or International Association of Business Communicators (IABC)

Examples of proven experience in communication and public relations would include:

  • Cultural transformation
  • Knowledge of best practices
  • Knowledge of technological breakthroughs in the communications space and implementation experience if any
  • Proven crisis communication experience (large scale events)
  • Communication around quarterly results cycle
  • Media training for executives
  • Expertise in social media, branding and brand management
  • Previous experience in managing a reputational crisis situation
