Job Description

Applications are invited for a Communications Officer to work alongside a small, collaborative team to execute communications plans for the University. The Communications Officer plays a key role in sharing the University’s brand story with the public, and in promoting effective communication with our stakeholders. They work with diverse forms of media, writing, editing and producing various internal and external communications materials. In addition, they support a wide variety of University goals, including public engagement, student recruitment, reputation management and fundraising.

Temporary Full-Time Maternity Leave Replacement Position (ASAP to 3 July 2020)
Pay Grade M ($34.50 to $36.93 per hour)

Some Typical Duties

  • Creates a wide variety of editorial and marketing content for digital and print mediums.
  • Writes and edits news and feature stories, website copy, internal memos, newsletters, speaking notes and other documents as required.
  • Coordinates the editorial process. Develops and plans writing assignments, maintains the editorial calendar, and publishes content to the University website.
  • Participates in communications planning. Develops performance indicators and measures, analyzes and reports on communications efforts.
  • In collaboration with Communications staff, develops a comprehensive communications plan that helps the University meet its recruitment, reputation and public engagement goals.
  • Lead a wide variety of projects from concept through production and evaluation, taking responsibility for timelines, budgets and deliverables.
  • Serves as a liaison to internal and external partners. Evaluates requests for support and provides advice when appropriate.
  • Directs the work of external agencies, contractors and student staff, as required.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, marketing or a related field.
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in corporate communications or media.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Interest in art, design and media.
  • Advanced writing, editing and storytelling skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex information using plain language.
  • Ability to identify stories of interest and create high quality content for multiple platforms.
  • Excellent project management and time management skills, including the ability to work to deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with a broad range of individuals and stakeholders.
  • Passionate and self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to deliver and receive constructive feedback in a productive manner.
  • Familiarity with website content management platforms (e.g. WordPress, Craft).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with content marketing and email marketing is considered an asset.
  • Skills in photo, video and/or audio production considered an asset.
  • Experience working in the arts, creative industries or post-secondary sector is considered an asset.
