The Communications and Engagement Department is looking for a dynamic, talented, and experienced communications professional to join our team, focusing on the Environment portfolio. If you are interested in helping to develop and deliver strategic communications plans and products that inform Edmontonians about key services, programs and initiatives, let’s talk! 

In this fast-paced work environment and with a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will: 
  • Contribute to ensuring the City is informing citizens about programs, services, and initiatives in timely, open, honest and transparent ways, using accessible and user-friendly communication channels 
  • Consult and identify communications needs and options by advising senior leaders managing operational areas and planning and development priorities 
  • Lead the development, implementation, and management of short and long-term communications strategies to support multiple client groups responsible for various programs and services within the Environment portfolios 
  • Build strong working relationships with partners, colleagues and external stakeholders 
  • Through the development of strong relationships, manage and strategize client expectations for positive corporate and department outcomes 
  • Write and edit a variety of materials, including communications and issues management plans, news releases, social media, speeches, key messages, backgrounders, letters, briefing notes, web content, articles, brochures, presentations, and promotional materials for a range of audiences 
  • Proactively and reactively manage emerging issues and media relations 
  • Provide coaching and support for media interviews 
  • Organize and coordinate events, including writing speaking notes, liaising with participants and producing other materials that may be required 
  • Translate technical or business unit specific material into easy to understand communication for the general public 
  • Develop and lead the production of communication materials and plans, manage suppliers and consultants, and ensure products meet corporate standards, business objectives, and are on or under budget


  • University graduation in a communications, public relations or related discipline, supplemented by a minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in a corporate communications, public relations or public affairs position


  • Diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in a corporate communications, public relations or public affairs position

  • Minimum of 2 years (degree) to 4 years (diploma) of experience in creating, developing, implementing and evaluating communication plans, social marketing initiatives, and media relations (preparing spokespeople and acting as a spokesperson)

  • Exceptional writing, editing and storytelling skills with extensive knowledge of communications practices, principles, and techniques

  • Experience building strong, respectful and inclusive working relationships with colleagues at all levels of an organization, including senior leaders managing operational and policy/program areas, and contractors or consultants

  • Superior issues identification, management and media relations skills

  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal  and presentation skills

  • Strong project management and event planning skills

  • Experience and proficiency with contemporary computer technologies (e.g., Google platform, Microsoft Word, Adobe suite, etc.)

  • Knowledge of City of Edmonton initiatives and programs related to infrastructure design and construction, waste services, and urban form development would be an asset

  • Accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) would be an asset

  • After-hours work is required to ensure communications services during peak operational periods or during unanticipated events affecting program and service delivery
