How do you respond when leadership asks you to make bad information about your company look good? What do you do when your organization pursues unethical actions despite your recommendations? How does modern technology impact public relations ethics? How can we be ethically proactive about emerging priorities and trends? What are the ethical considerations of new forms of journalism over traditional media?

Communicators are uniquely positioned to influence and persuade leadership in strategic decision-making. As PR professionals, it’s our responsibility to help businesses exhibit transparent, accurate, authentic and trustworthy behaviour to build credibility. Join us as a panel of industry experts share their examples of ethical dilemmas across multiple industries, as well as their tips and tools for acting as the “corporate conscience” when confronted with ethical dilemmas, helping their employers act in the best interest of the public, be transparent and live their values.

Moderator

Colin Babiuk, MA, APR, FCPRS

Colin is an Assistant Professor in MacEwan University’s Public Relations Diploma program. He has over 30 years of experience in the private and public sectors. Colin is an accredited member and a Fellow of the Canadian Public Relations Society. A published author, his experience includes issues management, stakeholder relations, media relations and marketing.

Panelists

Jim Rudolph, President, JGR Communications

Throughout his career, Jim has helped businesses and organizations steer through reputational issues and crises. These difficult situations test ethical boundaries and the integrity of public relations professionals. Having been a reporter before delving into corporate communications and public relations, Jim brings a truth-tellers’ lens to each situation, helping organizations understand the implications of all actions in the court of public opinion.

Jim is passionate about helping clients build clear strategy and deliver powerful narrative to connect with stakeholders and audiences. His 22 years of communications and media experience covers a wide range of industries, including agri-food, economic development, health care, transportation and utilities.

Jim holds a B.A. in Communications Studies from the University of Calgary and a diploma in print journalism from Lethbridge College.

Amanda Nielsen

Amanda Nielsen is the co-owner of Norwood Dental Centre, a start-up dental practice in north central Edmonton. She is responsible for driving practice growth through communications and PR. Prior to her dental start-up, Amanda worked in public affairs as an in-house lobbyist for the Alberta Real Estate Association and as a consultant at Hill+Knowlton Strategies.

“In both health care and political communications, ethical PR is essential to the long-term reputational success of both one’s clients and the practitioner themselves. A reputation takes years to build, but only seconds to destroy.”

She is graduate of the Grant MacEwan Public Relations program and is currently completing her MBA through Royal Roads University.

Leslie Beard

Leslie Beard is the principal of LBcommunications, a strategic communications and issues management firm. For most of her career, Leslie has managed communications and marketing functions for large, complex public and private sector organizations that are often in the public and media spotlight (multinational chemical company, major health provider). She often works with seniors leaders on major issues and problems that can potentially threaten an organization’s reputation and ability to operate.

Leslie strongly believes that trust, and in turn ethical behaviour, is at the centre of building strong relationships and achieving success in all communications.
