Public Information Officer II

Job Description

The City of Edmonton is seeking an experienced communications professional with a passion for making Edmonton one of the best cities in Canada in which to live. As the successful candidate, you will join a dynamic and high-performing team that provides communications advice and support to the Community Services department. By working with clients and colleagues, you will be responsible for communicating the benefits and services available to Edmontonians through City-owned recreation facilities and attractions, golf courses, cemeteries, seniors' recreation centres and cultural attractions including the City Arts Centre and the City Archives. You will also lead issues management within these portfolios and support media relations and social media efforts. The candidate will also be required to support other areas of the department which may be outside of the regular portfolio, including relief on-call media relations support for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services. 

Duties include:

·         Developing and implementing communication plans and evaluating their effectiveness

·         Identifying emerging issues and implementing strategies to position the City effectively

·         Proactively and reactively managing media relations to support timely, accurate and fair reporting, including planning media events, crafting key messages and coaching spokespeople

·         Leveraging social media to advance business goals

·         Providing communications support to externally-focused special events

·         Writing news releases, speeches, presentations and other communication vehicles

·         Developing campaigns and overseeing the production of collateral materials including programming guides and related program promotions

Qualifications

·         University graduation in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position. Accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) would be an asset

·         Experience working in a large organization

·         Media relations and event management experience, including experience acting as a media spokesperson

·         Excellent written and verbal communications skills

·         Knowledge of the requirements of mass communication media and good background knowledge of allied fields such as social media and web-based communications

·         Superior issues identification, communication planning and issues management skills

·         Understanding of public administration and experience in dealing with government officials would be an asset

Note: Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy.  This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance.

 

Hours of Work: 33.75 Hours per week, Monday - Friday. Will include after hours on-call work. 

Salary Range: 21M, Salary Grade: 044, $35.133 - $44.274 (Hourly), $2,371.48 - $2,988.50 (Bi-Weekly), $61,895.56 - $77,999.72 (Annually). The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
