Corporate Communications Manager

Job Description

Western Coal Corp., headquartered in Vancouver, BC, produces high quality metallurgical and thermal coal from mines in northeast BC (Canada) and West Virginia (USA). The Company has the capacity to produce 7 million tonnes per year with a 20+ year coal reserve base. Western also owns 55% of Energybuild (AIM:EBG) which produces anthracite and thermal coal from mines in Wales (UK).

Western Coal’s objectives are to:

  • Produce and sell over 7 million tonnes per year of high quality metallurgical coal to the top steelmakers around the world
  • Allocate resources prudently and efficiently for the development of its coal properties, to achieve maximum value for the Company's shareholders
  • Demonstrate to regulators, First Nations, local communities and other stakeholders that the Company will safely conduct its operations in an environmentally and socially responsible manner 

POSITION SCOPE:
Reporting to the Director of Investor Relations, the Corporate Communications Manager will oversee the execution of all corporate communications channels, both traditional and new (social) media, to ensure the effective delivery of all internal and external communications in a manner that is consistent with the strategic objectives of the corporation and ensures maximum value.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Internal & External Media Communications

  • Writes and develops electronic, print and web based communications, actively seeking out key business activities to share across the organization; Manages and maintains content/design on Western Coal’s intranet and internet
  • Develops effective relationships with service providers, including media and public relations agencies, vendors and suppliers to ensure delivery of quality, cost effective and timely services across the corporation
  • Helps to ensure proper and consistent positioning of the corporation with internal and external constituencies with an emphasis on proactive media relations and media strategy
  • Ensures message, brand and reputation consistency across publications/written communications 

General Corporate Communications

  • Ensures the development, implementation and monitoring of policies, procedures, standards and practices relating to the execution of all internal and external communications strategies, plans and programs
  • Develops and implements an internal communications plan including regular release of internal newsletter(s), Intranet content, etc.
  • Develops corporate bulletins and other significant corporate publications
  • As appropriate, helps raise the corporation’s profile and the company’s presence as an industry leader
  • Continually measures the effectiveness of each communications channel and recommends opportunities for improvement
  • Researches and stays current on emerging trends, best practices and opportunities in the field of communications with the goal of improving the execution of communications

Investor/Stakeholder Communications

  • Participates in the development of corporate communications strategies as these relates to the delivery of communications by providing insights and other relevant input.
  • Advises and counsels senior management on all aspects of corporate communications
  • Drives and supports communications from management to employees, ensuring feedback from employees is brought to the management team
  • Anticipates emerging issues and ensures the company communicates effectively to a variety of stakeholders
  • Provides visibility of employees’ / business / marketing success stories to stakeholders, bringing to attention those success stories that are worth being promoted

Strategy

  • Participates in the development of corporate communications strategies as these relates to the delivery of communications by providing insights and other relevant input. 
  • Leads the development and execution of the corporation’s social media strategy, ensuring alignment with the overall communications strategy and that it responds to corporate needs
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in communications and media relations, preferably in a publicly visible company in a complex, regulated industry
  • Accomplished business writer, familiar with corporate communication and website development
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skill
  • Solid project management skills with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work independently with initiative
  • Good understanding of the link between strategic business objectives and communications planning
  • Understands fundamentals that make communications credible: anticipation, urgency, accuracy, details and follow-through, action, feedback
  • Ability to liaise with people at all levels of the organization (from top management to mine site employees)
  • Experience working directly with senior management and external stakeholders to develop key messages and communication strategies
  • Extensive knowledge of media, both electronic and print, coupled with experience developing profile opportunities and managing media enquiries
  • Demonstrated success in issue management.

EDUCATION:
Bachelors or Masters Degree in Communication, Journalism or Public Relations is preferred
